Common Marshmallow or Althaea Officinalis, belongs to the Malvaceae family. The botanical name for Altea, comes directly from the Greek Althain meaning "to heal." It grows in moist places, along ditches and canals, usually in country areas. It is widespread in much of Europe, North Africa and Asia, as far as central Siberia and Pakistan. The roots have soothing properties, which is why in the past they were given to infants to chew on during the teething period.

Altea root extract contains starch, pectins, mucilage, sugars, fats and tannins. It has various properties, emollient, soothing and protective of mucous membrane and skin. This is why it is also used in sun routine products.
