Fomes Officinalis, or Larch Mushroom, is an inedible fungus that grows in tubers arranged in multiple layers that renew themselves annually and are positioned vertically to allow spores to fall. Its name is Fomes Officinalis, commonly known as the Larch Agaric. In ancient times, it was referred to as “Agaricus medicorum” to highlight its therapeutic properties against intestinal ailments and snake bites.
It is still used today in the preparation of herbal medicines and bitters. Once highly sought after, the therapeutic use of this mushroom did not gain widespread application because it was quite rare and therefore very expensive; however, it contributed to the success of numerous liqueurs that derived their bitter taste precisely from the potent active compounds of this mushroom.
