Rooibos, Afrikaans for "red bush," is a shrub a shrub, Asphalatus Linearis, that grows in South Africa, in the Cedarberg Mountains area. It appears as a shrub with green leaves and red stems, with small yellow flowers. During oxidation, the leaves turn a mahogany color, hence the name "red tea," although it is not derived from the tea plant itself (Camellia Sinensis).

Its leaves contain different types of flavonoids, such as quercetin, lutein, and rutin, with powerful anti-oxidant actions that can fight free radicals, which are responsible for cell aging. It also contributes a good content of minerals such as calcium, manganese and fluoride.

Traditionally used by South African women to soothe colicky infants, Rooibos appears to possess anti-spasmodic and calming abilities. It is also known and used in cosmetics for its analgesic, antiallergic, antibacterial, and antiviral properties.
