The pineapple is an evergreen plant of the Bromeliaceae family, originally from Latin America, now extended to all tropical and sub-tropical areas. Already cultivated by the Maya, Inc and Atzechi, Colombo saw that fruit in Guadeloupe in 1493. The natives of Latin America called her "Nana", the Portuguese "pinez", from which pineapple in Italian, French and German; For the Spaniards it was the "piña" for the similarity to a pine cone: hence the English term "Pine Apple".

In the 16th century, the Spanish writer Fernandez de Oviedo described the pineapple as "the most beautiful woman in the herbal world", referring to the beauty and goodness of the fruit.
